A Texas congressperson just introduced a “Bracero 2.0” bill — legislation aimed at expanding temporary visas for farmworkers as ICE agents raid farms. Temporary worker visa programs often exclude workers from foundational protections like the ability to switch jobs, Social Security benefits, and more.
Trump’s promise to deport millions of people in the coming years will lead to millions of job losses for U.S. citizens as well, according to a new analysis from the Economic Policy Institute. “Because jobs held by U.S.-born and immigrant workers are often complementary and economically linked, the shrinking supply of immigrant labor can adversely affect employer demand for jobs held by both groups of workers,” the group reports.
Labor unions on Long Island are demanding the feds release a college student who was arrested by immigration agents and is being detained in Louisiana. “When a young woman with protected status is detained, it’s not just Sara who is targeted. It’s every worker, every student, every immigrant who calls this country home,” said the Long Island Federation of Labor in a statement. Unions continue to spearhead the protest against Trump’s brutal mass deportation regime.
